Performance appraisal is an essential human resource management practice used to evaluate employees’ work performance and effectiveness within an organization. It involves the systematic assessment of an employee’s skills, productivity, behavior, and contribution to organizational objectives. The main purpose of performance appraisal is to provide feedback to employees, identify areas for improvement, and recognize outstanding performance. A well-structured performance appraisal system helps organizations enhance employee motivation, increase productivity, and ensure that employees’ goals are aligned with the overall goals of the organization. It also assists management in making important decisions regarding promotions, salary increments, training needs, and career development. Through regular evaluations, organizations can identify skill gaps and implement appropriate training programs to improve employee capabilities. Moreover, performance appraisal promotes better communication between employees and supervisors, encouraging transparency and fairness in the workplace. When implemented effectively, it not only improves individual performance but also contributes to organizational success by developing a more skilled, motivated, and committed workforce.
