Abstract

Income inequality has emerged as one of the most significant socio-economic challenges of the 21st century. At the same time, social mobility—the ability of individuals to move up or down the economic ladder—serves as a key indicator of fairness and equality of opportunity within a society. This paper examines the relationship between income inequality and social mobility through an analysis of theoretical perspectives, empirical evidence, and policy implications. The findings suggest that higher levels of income inequality are generally associated with lower levels of social mobility, resulting in persistent cycles of poverty and unequal access to opportunities. While some theoretical arguments propose that inequality may incentivize effort and innovation, empirical evidence overwhelmingly indicates that excessive inequality undermines mobility by restricting access to education, financial resources, and social networks. The paper concludes that reducing inequality and promoting inclusive growth are essential for enhancing social mobility and ensuring long-term socio-economic stability
