Abstract

The rapid digitisation of banking services has transformed the financial sector, enabling seamless and real-time transactions for millions of customers globally. HDFC Bank, one of India's leading private-sector banks, has aggressively adopted digital platforms including internet banking, mobile applications, unified payment interfaces (UPI), and net banking portals to serve its expansive customer base. While these innovations offer unprecedented convenience, they simultaneously introduce a spectrum of cyber security threats that endanger the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of financial data. This study investigates the nature, frequency, and impact of cyber security risks encountered in digital financial transactions at HDFC Bank. Using a mixed-methods research design, the study draws upon both primary data collected through structured questionnaires administered to 150 respondents— comprising bank employees and customers—and secondary data sourced from RBI annual reports, CERT-In advisories, and published literature. The analysis employs descriptive statistics, chisquare tests, and weighted average scoring to identify the most prevalent threats, assess organisational preparedness, and evaluate the adequacy of existing cyber security frameworks. Findings reveal that phishing attacks, account takeover fraud, SIM swapping, and malware-based intrusions are among the most frequently encountered threats. The study further highlights gaps in customer awareness and incident reporting mechanisms. Recommendations encompass multi-factor authentication reinforcement, AI-driven threat detection, regulatory compliance alignment, and proactive customer education programmes.
