Social media platforms are becoming a part of the higher education landscape as an unprecedented platform for education across the globe. Students today are more frequently using social media apps like WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, LinkedIn, and X (previously Twitter) for academic communication, sharing information, collaborative learning and social interaction in India, especially in Uttar Pradesh. The digital platforms provide great educational opportunities by making learning resources more accessible and helping students to be more involved in learning; however, they also pose problems in the aspects of academic distraction, cyberbullying, misinformation, privacy problems, and mental health issues. This study comparatively analyzes the concerns of education and socialization in relation to the use of social media by students of higher education institutions in Uttar Pradesh in a critical way. Researching a large amount of existing literature, the study evaluates both the positive and negative side of social media use and examines how social media affects academic achievement, communication, social relationships and student well-being. The study draws attention to the learning-promoting and emerging social issues facilitating role of social media. The results indicate that to achieve the maximum benefits and reduce the disadvantages of digital literacy interventions, it is necessary to have effective digital literacy initiatives, institutional policies and responsible practices of use. The study adds to the current conversation on technology assisted learning and recommends for the educationists, policy makers and higher education administrators of Uttar Pradesh.
