Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping development pathways across education, healthcare, agriculture, public administration, finance, and environmental management. Its growing capacity to process large-scale data, automate decision-making, and generate predictive insights has created new opportunities for addressing complex social and economic challenges. This paper examines the role of AI in promoting equitable and sustainable development in the 21st century. It argues that AI can contribute to inclusive growth by improving access to services, strengthening policy implementation, optimizing resource use, and supporting progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the same time, AI also presents major concerns related to digital inequality, algorithmic bias, privacy, labor displacement, governance gaps, and unequal access to technological infrastructure. The study is descriptive and analytical in nature and is based on secondary sources, including recent reports and policy documents from the United Nations, UNESCO, and OECD. The paper discusses the conceptual relationship between AI, equity, and sustainability; explores sector-wise applications; presents comparative tables; and highlights challenges, opportunities, and policy implications. The study concludes that AI can become a powerful instrument for equitable and sustainable development only when guided by ethical governance, humancentered design, public accountability, and inclusive digital capacity-building. AI should therefore be treated not merely as a tool of efficiency, but as a strategic developmental resource that must be aligned with social justice and long-term sustainability goals.
